Oh, yeah. The video says he endorses Hillary Clinton. It's a web ad for Hillary Clinton.
But, make no mistake ... this ...
http://youtube.com/...
... is an ad for Barack Obama. It's even arguably a hitpiece against Hillary Clinton.
Let's take it apart below the fold.
Issue 1: Trust. "Who do you trust?"
For anyone young enough (or old enough) to remember 1989's Batman movie, the scene of Jack as Joker comes at a pivotal moment. The people of Gotham are not exactly sure what to think of Batman. He has apparently failed to show up for a showdown with the Joker. Moreover, the Joker is throwing cash at the crowd to make them favor him. If this isn't the perfect metaphor for a false populist fueled by PAC money fighting a real crusader, I don't know what is.
Issue 2: Clarity and reality.
Jack as insane writer in the Shining sitting at the bar, musing that things aren't making sense, is not a ringing endorsement that the correct choice is HRC. In fact, I don't know why Jack didn't decide to really skewer HRC and have his Witches of Eastwick Satan in the Church clip make the cinematic emphasis to the point of Clarity and Reality. Axe murderers don't make good advocates.
Issue 3: Military readiness.
So, if Col. Jessup is telling you that Clinton will make the military supported and ready, then you know that HRC will live up to the Jessup standard. That being the standard in which gay soldiers are tortured to death at the base in Guantanamo Bay. I mean, did ANYBODY think this through? "You can't handle the truth" is almost as famous a phrase as "show me the money."
Issue 4: Inevitability
Jake Gittes stating "you're right" is just as he realizes that nothing is going to change. Yep, that's the HRC brand of inevitability, resigned cynicism. Let me have a heaping pile of that, please.
Issue 5: Female Commander in Chief
Again, we have Jessup, in a particularly sexist moment for a Nicholson character. The entire line shown in the clip is meant to be a double-entendre, and is followed by him lighting a cigar. Holy cow, people. A cigar.
Where are the clips of Jack as Schmidt, crying over the plight of the world and his ability to make a difference in a far away life? Where are the clips of him in As Good As It Gets? He's played anti-heroes and unlikely heroes, but we get villains and cynics. Murderers, martinets, and maniacs.
He has to really be endorsing Obama.
