Now that it looks like Mississippi is going to be in play for the Democratic nomination for a President, I shouldn't have been surprised to see this on the front page of our major newspaper, The Clarion-Ledger:
Purged voting rolls to be fixed
Pissed, yes. Surprised, no.
I am a poll worker here in Madison County, in Ms Sautermeister's District. I know her. But I don't know, or understand why she did this. In her capacity as an Election Commissioner, I know she is partially responsible for the integrity of the voter rolls, but the magnitude, and the timing, is stunning in its Federal legal ramifications.
From the Article:
Madison County's voter rolls are expected to be intact by Tuesday's presidential and congressional primaries despite the improper actions of one election commissioner to remove more than 10,000 voters from the books.
The names were moved from active to inactive status since January by District 1 Election Commissioner Sue Sautermeister without prior knowledge or approval of the other four election commissioners.
Federal election law states that names may not be moved to the inactive list within 90 days of a federal election.

She claimed the purge is based on returned mail from jury duty notices and drivers licenses renewals. I am not an attorney. Is this "caging?" Maybe she does have 10,000 pieces of mail to back up her actions.
And I don't think it is moot.
As if turning waiters into cops and not allowing GLBTs to addopt, it is oddly reassuring to know we still have the old-fashioned problems to fight.
(First time diary. Don't be too mean, please!)
Update per condoleaser. Thanks!
