It's official, Hillary only cares about Hillary. In case anyone doubted that fact, she has proven it over and over the last couple weeks.
She has a 'scorched Earth' campaign policy now. And it has two missions.
Mission 1: Destroy Obama. Make it seem impossible for him to win the general election. Forcing the super delegates to overturn the pledged delegate winner(there is no way for her to catch Obama). There is no barrier to how low her and her campaign will go.
Mission 2: If she cannot subvert the process and destroy Obama enough to get the super delegates to overturn his pledged delegate lead. Then make sure that McCain beats Obama in November. That way she can run again in 2012.
This is being voiced to progressives all across America the last few days.
Some examples are Keith Olbermann calling her McClinton and likening her to Lieberman.
Senator Gary Hart saying that .Clinton's only loyalty is to her own personal ambition, not to America or the Democratic Party
Most of those rules are unwritten and are based on common understandings, acceptable practices, and the best interest of the political party a candidate seeks to lead. One of those rules is this: Do not provide ammunition to the opposition party that can be used to destroy your party's nominee. This is a hyper-truth where the presidential contest is concerned.
By saying that only she and John McCain are qualified to lead the country, particularly in times of crisis, Hillary Clinton has broken that rule, severely damaged the Democratic candidate who may well be the party's nominee, and, perhaps most ominously, revealed the unlimited lengths to which she will go to achieve power. She has essentially said that the Democratic party deserves to lose unless it nominates her.
Senator Obama is right to say the issue is judgment not years in Washington.... For her now to claim that Senator Obama is not qualified to answer the crisis phone is the height of irony if not chutzpah, and calls into question whether her primary loyalty is to the Democratic party and the nation or to her own ambition.
Arianna Huffington says that Clinton hasn't found 'her own voice', she found Karl Rove's voice .
After her New Hampshire comeback, Clinton famously declared: "I found my own voice."
For this latest comeback, she found Karl Rove's voice.
And we got that jaw-dropping moment on 60 Minutes where Clinton generously announced that she takes Obama at his word that he's not a Muslim and rejected rumors that he is with the so-big-you-could-fit-a-madrass-in-it caveat, "As far as I know." What's next, "Obama is a human being... as far I know"?
And as I was listening to Stephanie Miller today, she was calling Clinton all kinds of names and likening her to a Carl Rove-Joe Lieberman mutant.
Even Larry David chimes in, saying the thought of Hillary picking up that phone scares the shit out of him .
A few weeks ago, I started to feel sorry for her. Oh Christ, let her win already...Who cares...It's not worth it. There's not that much difference between them. She can have it. Anything to avoid watching her descend into madness. So I switched. I started rooting for her. It wasn't that hard. Compromise comes easy to me. I was on board.
And then I saw the ad.
I watched, transfixed, as she took the 3 a.m. call...and I was afraid...very afraid. Suddenly, I realized the last thing this country needs is that woman anywhere near a phone. I don't care if it's 3 a.m. or 10 p.m. or any other time. I don't want her talking to Putin, I don't want her talking to Kim Jong Il, I don't want her talking to my nephew. She needs a long rest. She needs to put on a sarong and some sun block and get away from things for a while, a nice beach somewhere -- somewhere far away, where there are...no phones.
{Updated to add: Thanks again to everyone and to nonie2324 for this Rachael Maddow audio}
On yesterday's Rachel Maddow show - audio is at the link - transcript below...
DAVID BENDER:
"The largest block of delegates that actually could decide this thing are the 350 super delegates – your favorite people in the world: Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Howard Dean, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, these people, right now can say 'look we’re not going to decide to end this campaign tomorrow because that would be anti-democratic and it would be a disaster in a different way then in the attack campaigns, but we are going to call you two to Washington and we are going to get a meeting together and when we come out of it we’re all going to pledge that we are going to be attacking John McCain and not each other.
And which ever one of you significantly violates that and goes negative and tries to tear down the potential other who is the democratic nominee, we’re going to support that person who you are attacking and this nomination will be settled.'"
Are Hillary supporters ever going to wake up and realize what she is trying to do to our Country and the Democratic Party? Is anyone going to tell Hillary that destroying the Democratic Party's chance of winning in November in order to satisfy her own personal ambitions is sick?
Does anyone believe that Hillary has stayed with Bill all these years for any other reason than personal ambition?
We need the Democratic leaders to step up and put a stop to her blatant disregard for the Country and the Democratic Party.
Gore? Dean? Edwards? Anyone?
{UPDATE: 6:03PM} Wow, my first time on the Rec list! Thanks Kossacks! :-)
