I am a 54 year old African-American woman, with a history of being active in the Pan-African and black cultural revolution of the 60's and 70's. I have of course lived thru the assassinations of all my heroes. Malcolm, Martin, Medgar, JFK, RFK, and the ongoing character assassinations of Jesse and Al........
I want to take a little time out to thank some white people.
I want to thank many of you on Daily Kos who I read on a daily basis, who have dared to move beyond whiteness to a very new frontier in our country. This frontier is the one that King went to the mountaintop to see, and attempted to help create........the beloved community.
Your courage, your willingness to really think and weigh your words and actions,....your principled passion......and even your disagreements and fights........
Talk about giving a middle aged black woman some hope!!!!...I can't tell you how many times I have almost been in tears, realizing that the oppression that I have felt as almost monolithic, is not quite as big as I thought it was........
Do you know how good that makes me feel? That all the time I have thought about race and taught about race and ethnicity, culture and social justice over the years........it has been worth it...to garner a glimmer of cross cultural understanding, brotherhood and sisterhood, and to enjoin a struggle for the well being of our most beloved country. With all its flaws.....it is my country, our country....and I am so proud of the people I have met on here. It gives my heart some peace.
Thank you for that.
