I've been calling independents in PA for Obama. These people have until March 24 to change their registration to Democrat in order to vote in the Dem. primary.
Yesterday evening I called 40 people in a bit over an hour. Mostly answering machines and wrong numbers, but out of a dozen people reached, I found 4 or 5 Obama supporters who were willing to go to pa.barackobama.com/pavote and switch their registration to Democrat. Last week I had a similar success rate, about 4 new votes per hour.
This is ***WAY** more effective than normal phonebanking. Typically, being called raises the likelihood of voting by 5%, so you need to identify 20 supporters per every vote your call brings in. However, in this case, every supporter you find is a new vote! That means you're up to 20 times as effective now as you will be next week!
Rather than fret and sweat about minor fluctuation in the polls, please go to the Obama website phonebank page select Pennsylvania, and make a few calls. 20 calls takes about 30 minutes.
Since voter registration forms must be received by Monday, March 24, by this Friday people will no longer have the time to print the forms and be sure they're received on time, so it will be too late! At that point, your phone calls will go back to their regular level of effectiveness = under 10% what they are today.
The best time to call is between 7PM and 8:45PM Eastern.
The Obama campaign has set a goal of 100,000 new Democrats by March 24. An Obama victory in PA will decisively end the Clinton "kitchen sink" campaign. A narrow defeat will keep him on track to be the nominee.
