So this, my first diary is actually a response to many comments that I have seen on MyDD recently that have really just gotten on my nerves. The comment that struck me to write this entry was from a 60 year old Clinton supporter. He made the comment about how sick he was with young voters "still young enough to believe in the toothfairy" being naive about the world and just jumping on the Obama bandwagon. He claimed he was voting Clinton because the world was a crazy and complex and that Clinton was the best to deal with this. Here is my response to his comment, and my own reasons for voting for Obama
You know whats a really terrible idea? Discrediting an entire voting block... Seriously, I am sick and tired of people saying how young voters don't know what the world is like and are just going along with the Obama craze because they are young and stupid. Yes, I'm one of those young voters. I will be 22 at this election and voting for the second time in a GE. And yes, I support Obama.
Let me tell you why I support Obama though. Its because the world IS a messed up and crazy place. More specifically, its because our government is a messed up and crazy place. Over the last 30 years we have seen the increase of the tyranny of majority in our government. It started with Democrats who held the house with a stranglehold for decades. In 1994 when Republicans had enough, they took this problem to a whole new level. By centralizing power with the speaker, they were able to essentially silence the minority by whipping out any hopes of amendments or compromises on bills. This has continued into the current Democratic house and senate with Dems now going a tit for tat attack against Republicans. Sure, they hurt us a lot over the last 14 years, but if we antagonize the minority now, it will be worse for us when we get back into the minority. Even though I am young I can see a cyclical structure here.
Here are my thoughts on Clinton. I actually do believe she will get more done then Obama if she is elected. This is because she will have the partisan effort to push through anything she wants. She will use whatever means necessary to complete her agenda. This will certainly involve the continuation of marginalizing the minority and will without a doubt backfire once Democrats lose the majority. Unfortunately our country is in desperate need of change right now. We cannot afford to continue this partisan push. This is why I cast my vote for Obama in Iowa, and will proudly do so for him in the GE. Obama will work with Republicans and hopefully bring an end to the tyranny of the majority. He will move to make amends with Republicans and bring our country together.
Sure, you may be 60 and cynical about the world for good reason. You have lived through the creation of this partisan government which has led to a broken nation. Rightly, you want to push your agenda forward and push Republicans out of the way. I, though, have my whole life ahead of me to live with this system. I would much prefer to change the system now, even if it means that some goals of Democrats in this election will get delayed a few years. If we can change the way our government works and mend the divide in America, then we MUST do so.
