I want to say that right now to Seantor Clinton. This whole thing reminds me of Sally Field....... humor me here and let me explain.....
-- Sally Field, Best Actress for "Places in the Heart," after having won in 1980 for "Norma Rae": "I haven't had an orthodox career, and I've wanted more than anything to have your respect. The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!" (1985)
We gave you your Oscars - a NY Senate Seat, twice - as a way of saying "thanks". You put up with a lot of BS - from Republicans and Bill. We all had a suspicion that there was more to you than you ever got to show us..... we wanted to make it up to you.....
You really didn't get a chance to shine as First Lady. You were expected to talk about cookie recipes and play the loyal wife when Bill made a fool of himself.
We know you were better than the schlock roles you got to play.... Your own career might have gone far better if you'd been a bit more discriminating earlier in your life.... I mean "Smokey and the Bandit" was hardly intellectually challenging.... Burt was handsome and we get the attraction for a bit but you really were better than he deserved. He did well enough and you did OK as well but you could have done so much more with someone else.....
So.... we UNDERSTAND. We realize that Bill wouldn't have gotten to be Governor of Arkansas much less President without you by his side (nudging him regularly - or kicking him under the table). Burt may have surprised people now and then with his later roles in life but let's be real, he's not been consistent and some of his performances made us wince.
We gave you your Oscars You pulled an RFK (though don't for a minute believe that you're at the same level experience-wise or accomplishment-wise) and carpetbagged a Senate Seat in New York. You did a better than expected job. Really. We were surprised. We liked you well enough. We gave it to you again.
But keep your ego under control.....
It's time to be real. You're stretching now.
In other years your performance now might have been good enough. We could have settled for some light fluff and laughed - been amused (hell we did it for Reagan, right?)
But now we have some serious drama going on. A role that will redefine what people think. It requires someone who can really perform.... someone who really FEELS the role, someone who BELIEVES it.
But this role is too much a stretch for you and you're not up to it. And because you've got some stellar talent on the stage with you that only makes this embarassingly clear....
You're not sharing the screen with "Smokey" (though McCain's giving Jackie Gleason a run for the money as the "Sheriff").
We'd be a lot more impressed if you built up your body of work and showed what you were really capable of in the company of truly great players. Give it some more time. We know and you know that you're not playing the cute ingenue - but fear not, you've got plenty of time left to play some substantial leading roles.
Instead of whining that you deserve the lead while only proving otherwise, you're annoyed that your play folded in Boston - you're still trying to drag it to Broadway figuring that there's no competition there right now. (OK, I'm mixing stage metaphors). Your backers are only going to lose MORE money. Pack it up, go back to the nice regular gig you already have, build up some more experience and build a case for later.
Right now..... you're an embarassment. You can't FORCE people up to show up at your show - no matter how lousy the competition is.... That revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" has lasted waaaaaaay too long, is GODAWFUL, not funny and dated beyond belief.....the new lead coming in can't remember his lines (even more so than the previous lead).... anyone that wanted to see THAT show already has - and more than a few regret the choice..... why ANYONE thinks THAT will still fly for another season is beyond me
And despite what you think, there's an astoundingly good revival of 'Camelot' playing to rave reviews on the road right now. It's coming to Broadway whether or not YOU want it to... and it's a GREAT show.
In comparison you're coming off as a really pale and not very funny knock-off of 'Spamalot' - and what was that about 'Soggy old blondes with their backsides in ponds is no basis for a system of government'?!?!..... think there's a message for you there?
C'mon already... get off the damn stage
Truth is we don't like you THAT much....... and you're really getting on our nerves now.
And tell Burt to PLEASE stay retired.
