We're taking a break from the regular Obama Veepstakes Poll series. It'll continue tomorrow with the quarter finals.

A few of you may remember that I also had a Republican edition of this poll after John McCain secured the nomination. Results of the initial 15 contestants are below the fold and you can also vote in the first runoff today.

Results of the first Veepstakes, McCain edition (225 votes):

  1. Charlie Crist 17% (39 votes)
  1. Condoleezza Rice 15% (35 votes)
  1. J.C. Watts 12% (29 votes)
  1. Mark Sanford 12% (28 votes)
  1. Tim Pawlenty 9% (22 votes)
  1. John Thune 5% (13 votes)
  1. Kay Bailey Hutchison 4% (11 votes)
  1. Jodi Rell 4% (10 votes)
  1. Frank Keating 4% (9 votes)
  1. Sarah Palin 4% (9 votes)
  1. Rick Perry 3% (7 votes)
  1. Jon Huntsman, Jr. 1% (4 votes)
  1. Bob Riley 1% (4 votes)
  1. John Ensign 1% (3 votes)
  1. Marsha Blackburn 0% (2 votes)

Today's runoff will be between the top five (links lead to their Wikipedia entries):

Gov. Charlie Crist (FL):

Pro: owes FL win to him, Gov, popular, swing state
Con: his personal life

Gov. Tim Pawlenty (MN):

Pro: young, gov, swing state
Con: several controversies during his gub term

Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice (CA?):

Pro: woman, African-American, experience
Con: her private life, being a member of the Bush administration

Gov. Mark Sanford (SC):

Pro: young, gov, from the south, conservative, popular
Con: his record in Congress

former Rep. J.C. Watts (OK):

Pro: African-American, young, conservative

Today's top two will be in next weekend's final.

Of course all these pros and cons are from John McCain's vantage point. Enjoy voting, if you can!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
