Bad News H&R Block is Hatin' on Gay people.
HARTFORD, CT – The American Civil Liberties Union sent a demand letter to H&R Block today demanding that it change its online tax preparation system to accommodate gay couples in Connecticut with civil unions. The ACLU is representing a couple with a civil union who attempted to file their taxes on the company’s website through their online service, TaxCut Online, but were told, "We don’t support Connecticut civil union returns." Through its website, the company said the couple would have to work with one of their professionals, by phone or at one of their office locations, which would be more time consuming and substantially more expensive.

UK Admits to Torturing Iraqi Prisoners-
Meanwhile, the British government has admitted its forces tortured nine Iraqi prisoners in 2003. The admission could lead to compensation payments to the eight surviving prisoners and the family of the ninth, who died from beatings by British jailers. The slain victim, Iraqi hotel worker Baha Musa, suffered ninety-three injuries to his body. Musa was twenty-six years old and the father of two children. His wife had died just two months earlier of a brain tumor.

Good News They just might free Siegalman
Ex-Alabama Gov. to be Freed on Bond
In Alabama, former Governor Don Siegelman has been ordered released from jail while he appeals a conviction on corruption charges. Siegelman is currently serving a seven-year, four-month prison sentence on charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud. Critics say he is the target of a political witch hunt. More than fifty former state attorney generals have called for a congressional investigation into Siegelman’s case. The release was ordered just hours after the House Judiciary Committee said it would call Siegelman to testify over whether his prosecution was politically motivated.

BAD NEWS:
The GAO studied 72 programs chosen for their large budgets, congressional interest and stage of delivery. Not a single one met standards for best practices in development, the agency said.
The high-profile new presidential Marine One helicopter has been rebudgeted in such a way that the GAO said it cannot even calculate what it will cost. It appears likely to come in at least $1 billion over initial estimates, according to the watchdog agency.
The Pentagon spends too much on programs because it does not have enough information, the report stated.

16 National Religious Organizations Oppose New Nuclear Bomb PlantFor immediate release: March 25, 2008
Washington, DC...Sixteen national religious organizations filed formal public comments today opposing the administration's plans to build a new nuclear bomb plant that would be wasteful, unneeded, and dangerous, the Friends Committee on National Legislation (Quakers) announced today.
"As religious leaders in the United States, we firmly oppose the administration’s multi-billion dollar plan to rebuild the nation’s nuclear weapons capabilities through the Department of Energy’s Complex Transformation proposal," declared a coalition of national Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, and Protestant groups in written comments submitted to the Energy Department at a public hearing in Washington, DC. "We call on our political leaders to show the moral and political courage necessary to bring about a shift in our nation’s nuclear weapons posture."
The hearing is one of a series of public events the Energy Department is holding to assess the environmental impact of Complex Transformation, the proposed plan to rebuild the U.S. nuclear weapons complex. The centerpiece of this proposal is a new nuclear weapons plant for the production of plutonium pits, the primary detonators in modern nuclear weapons. The Los Alamos National Laboratory, located 25 miles northwest of Santa Fe, NM, is the site slated for the new bomb plant.
The religious groups express concern that the facility would be used to develop a new generation of nuclear warheads, despite the moral and legal obligations of the United States to reduce its weapons arsenal.
