I am an Obama supporter writing a short plea to my fellow and sister Obama supporters to stop the unfair attacks on Clinton and her supporters, some of which have crossed over into open sexism or denial of sexism, and even homophobia.
When we mouth GOP Talking Points about either sexism or racism WE LOSE. it makes it harder, no change that, it makes it IMPOSSIBLE for us to get back on track and fight misogyny if we deny it exists now just because a Clinton supporter like Elton John is the one that brings it up.
As an Obama supporter i am thoroughly pissed at the remarks people who claim to support him are making on this site and others. today we saw open homophobia as well as the usual mixture of misguided remarks that dismiss the obvious fact that America is a misogynist country, and that sexism as well as racism marr our existence.
PLEASE STOP IF YOU REALLY SUPPORT OBAMA!
i am a Barack Obama supporter and i strongly disapprove of these messages of ignorance and intolance.
NOTE: this is not about fair attacks, which are a part of the campaign. so if you aren't making sexist or homophobic attacks, and aren't denying the obvious sexism and misogyny in American society I'M NOT TALKING TO YOU.
I am talking to and about those who have used sexist, and today even homophobic language to attack Clinton and her supporters and surrogates. you may be happy to write off the feminist vote or the gay vote or the common sense vote, but Obama NEEDS these votes.
so please, if you are going to say something homophobic or sexist don't do it as an Obama supporter.
Those who claim that just supporting Obama makes us sexists are wrong, BUT, as Obama supporters, if we are mad that people are calling us sexist or homophobic, the best response is NOT to act sexist or homophobic, which WAY too many have done on this site, IMO.
I am addressing Obama supporters here because i am an Obama supporter. but i obviously hope Clinton supporters will stop unfair attacks which downplay racism in America as well. i am not saying i think Obama supporters are any worse than Clinton supporters in this regard. i focus on them because i am an Obama supporter, and because he seems to be the presumptive nominee, so what his supporters do is VERY important.
And the number of times i've heard GOP talking points, from Obama supporters about sexism, or Clinton supporters about racism, is becoming very distressing. and i think we should all STOP IT! before it's too late. One of the most important jobs of the new president wil be fighting racism and sexism, if we deny they exist today we cannot possibly fight them effectively after we win the election.
what happened to updates?
i updated this earlier, but must not have hit publish again, very sorry.
so to re-update, in response to comments:
i did not give examples so as to not make this a personal attack on anyone. but the homophobia and denial of sexism in regards to Elton John was the latest trigger, in what i see as a long line of sexist attacks. i'm not going to argue about it, the sexism has been in plain site, if you don't believe it, then ignore my warning.
and i don't think Obama's supporters are worse than Clintons, who have been just as guilty by denying racism. but since i suport Obama i started with my own side.
if we deny racism or sexism, WE LOSE. they are real, and it hurts us to deny their power.
