There's a new MBNBC/McClatchy poll out that has it close, Clinton 48, Obama 43.
But eager to prove the'elitist' narrative of the moment, the media polled voters on bowling, gun ownership, hunting, and beer drinking.
Yes, Hillary won the first three groups...but Obama and Hillary tied the beer drinkers with 44% each in a largely working class state like PA!
Can we now put to rest the absurd Rovian media narrative that (regular) Beer drinkers favor Hillary and (elite) wine drinkers favor Obama?
Even before Bittergate erupted, the media frequently tried to cast Obama as the candidate of Chardonnay drinkers only. They wanted to say that regular people who drink beer don't like Obama.
Oops. They're tied! Their own poll proved them wrong!
The MSNBC write-up of the poll fails to even mention the result among beer drinkers...perhaps they are embarrassed that their own poll contradicted one of the traditional media's beloved narratives?
It makes me wonder....if they are tied among beer drinkers, and assuming Obama is ahead with wine drinkers, then where is Hillary's margin of victory coming from? Hard liquor drinkers or non-drinkers?
But this is such a lame point of discussion anyway. Upscale people drink beer like everyone else. Downscale people drink wine too. Wine even comes in a box if you can't afford the bottled stuff!
That the media even chose to poll on beer drinking and presidential preferences tells you a lot about their misplaced priorities. Given their obsession with identity and class politics, it is kind of delicious that their own poll blew up in their faces on that one.
As for the rest of the poll, MSNBC makes a case that the high undecideds are Clinton voters and that bodes well for her. On the other hand, there is a lot of energy on the Obama side and anger about the debate. Maybe there will be a NH-like disconnect between polls and reality, this time favoring Obama?
Who knows?
We'll see.
In the meantime I could use a beer.
