In obviously ignoring political history, Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter thinks the public can't remember when the spouse of the candidate he supports "won" New Hampshire.
Nutter Scoffs at Obama Camp's Spin on Pa. Vote
by KYW's Mike Dunn
Sen. Clinton's biggest local booster, Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter, is dismissing the Obama campaign's notion that a narrow loss for Obama on Tuesday is still a victory for him.
With Clinton expected to take the Commonwealth, strategists for Obama are that declaring if her margin of victory is only five or so percentage points, it is actually a win for Obama.
Mayor Nutter finds that concept amusing:
(laughs) "Only in the world of political spin can you try to somehow make the argument that a loss is really a win. It's quite interesting. It's quite fascinating."
And in playing down expectations, Mayor Nutter is playing down expectations. Apparently, he is going to pop the champaign corks if Hillary wins by one vote.
Nutter (in file photo above) says that in his world, even a one-point margin for Clinton is a victory for the New York senator -- and one that he predicts will carry her through to the next primaries. Meanwhile, he is going non-stop for his candidate:
"Sen. Clinton is a strong candidate, she's going to run very well here in Philadelphia and all across Pennsylvania. Our goal is to win the state."
I don't get Michael Nutter. As a resident of Philadelphia, I am finding out he is not the mayor he said he was going to be. His whole campaign mantra was, "It's a New Day! It's a New Way!". He said it more than Bill Clinton talked about a bridge to the 21st century. More than Gore talked about Risky, Tax, Schemes. Yet he supports a candidate from an old day who politics an old way?
I realize that he is bitter that Obama endorsed one of his rivals, Rep. Chaka Fattah in the primary, and not him. I am sure he is feeling like a doofus that the city that he is mayor of is being flooded by Obama-mania. He probably thinks supporting Hillary makes him look like a "New Kind of Black Man". That, "hey, look at me,...I am a black man from the inner-city and I am supporting a while lady!". I don't know what he thinks.
I wonder if any reporter asked him, "hey Mike...what about Clinton's 1992 "victory" in New Hampshire?". I would also like to know his answer about a one vote victory by Hillary. I am dissapointed in our local media here in Philly. They need to stop being so damn excited that Michael Nutter isn't John F. Street.
