"In five days, I did not observe a forced abortion or meet anybody who had any knowledge of them," he said, adding that no subsequent examples were ever brought to him.
So goes the report at today's TPM here:
what forced abortions?
Yet another hippo-crite mascarading as a Conservative Family Values candidate.
He took a vacation to the Marianas with Black Jack Abramof, seeing wonderful factories, filled with happy smiling people. Except without that sappy song.
Apparently, he "interviewed" dozens of workers, as well as religious leaders, and so not one abortion taking place, especially not any forced abortions.
I don't know about the Pacific, but in most situations, both to protect the health of the mother from infections, most operations are done behind closed doors. Here in the states, we protect the privacy of the woman. IN the Marianas, they have to protect their investment in slave labor. If abortions turned deadly, that would decrease profits for Schaffer's friends.
Schaffer kicked off his own soiled-diaper mess by suggesting that we import the Marianas labor techniques, claiming that they would easily work in the states. His all expenses paid golf, party, and vacation trip took place in 1999, AFTER US studies proved that torture, rape, forced abortions and slave labor were the rule, not the exception.
Not only are liberal and moderate forces beginning to question Schaffer, much to his chagrin, so are the ultra-conservative-reigious types that seem to pollute much of the Colorado landscape, especially near and in military bases.
I suspect that Schaffer is going to find the path to office tougher and tougher, mainly because he is not a very bright person. Somehow, listening and reading his responses brings to mind Tom Hanks' movie, where he said, Stupid is as Stupid does. One wonders if Schaffer picks Forest Gump as his role model.
Schaffer is but a symptom. There are growing reports that the GOP faces pretty serious problems, not the least of which is fund-raising. Dem senators and Dem candidates are out-pacing GOP senators by an incredible (and growing) margin.
