Hillary is trumping up numbers of $10 million in the 24 hrs since her Pennsylvania win. One would expect with the scorched earth policy that she will proceed to blow all that on the next two contests, if she intends to get the nomination.
Instead we find reports that her campaign is almost $15 mil. in the hole and she will most certainly want to recoup that loan she made to her campaign.
While the media goes on and on about a resurgence of the Clinton Candidacy, it seems all the more likely what we saw was a last minute attempt to replenish the coffers for the next campaign. Let us not forget Hillary sat on large amounts of cash that could have been used for Democratic challengers a few years ago and the Clintons ask for cash from donors more often then most TV evangelists. (See the Rec'd diary from the WSJ on this phenomenon).
Somewhere along the way, I think the Clintons realized this was a losing battle, but to suggest anything other then total victory is to end the fleecing of thousands of starry-eyed Democrats who still see Hillary as their pick to win. We have also read accounts of automated deposits continuing after people have asked her campaign to stop, and Hillary needed the infusion of cash that PA brought, not for a continued run, but just to pay the debts of the last few months.
I believe as the race wraps up we will see a continued degeneration of the rhetoric and Hillary sliding closer to the center. (Bomb Iran, the Sequel) - But what you will not see is proportional spending in relation to what she claims to have taken in. This is about getting as much debt and capital built up for after the election. We are no longer at a point where this has anything to do with her dwindling chances to be the nominee.
The real question is to the 25% of Clinton supporters who say they will vote McCain if she doesn't get the nomination (probably out of spite) I have one question for you.
Do you realize you are being played? And will you do something about it after the primary or prepare for four more years of Bush III.
