A second ad linking Barack Obama and Rev. Wright, which comes from Mississippi Republican candidate Greg Davis, is totally playing the race card. Unlike another much-reported North Carolina Republican ad attacking Obama, the Mississippi spot is actually airing on television. Davis is running against Democratic candidate Travis Childers for the Congressional District 1 open seat.
As written in The Daily Voice today:
First it was North Carolina. Now it's Mississippi. Following the example from the "Tarheel State," a Republican in Mississippi has unveiled a new attack ad connecting Senator Barack Obama to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. But unlike the controversial North Carolina ad, the Mississippi ad is actually airing on television.
Childers will face right-wing Trent Lott disciple Greg Davis in a run off election on May 13th.
Reverand Wright made televised appearances this weekend and the ad, by Greg Davis, is now airing amid all the heightened media chatter.
As written in the Washington Post blog:
Barely two weeks before a special election to fill a vacant U.S. House seat, GOP nominee Greg Davis has begun airing a political attack ad featuring grainy images of Obama, his former pastor and Davis's Democratic opponent, Travis Childers, who is running an unexpectedly strong campaign in a conservative northern Mississippi district.
In Mississippi, Childers almost secured the 50 percent of the vote needed in last Tuesday's voting to win the seat outright, but he now faces a May 13 runoff against the GOP's Davis to replace former congressman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), who vacated the seat in early January when he was appointed to the U.S. Senate.
The Louisiana and Mississippi races follow the special election in Illinois last month, when Democrat Bill Foster used Obama to score an upset win in the district previously held for 21 years by former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.).
It seems Childers is the man to beat here. Despite the attack ads, Travis Childers is running a strong race and can win in this red state. Why else would Davis be running these ads?
However, Childers can still use our support and from now until May 13th, we should be getting the word out about this real Democratic possibility.
