The most fundamental principle of leadership, management and parenting is one of the simplest: "Reward good behavior and punish bad behavior." If you deviate from this principle, all you will get is more bad behavior. As any parent knows, taking a stand is never easy. A noteworthy example from this election season was the cascade of states trying to move their primaries and caucuses earlier in the year than all of the other states. Left unchecked, this would have started this already-too-long election season into December 2007. Instead, the DNC took a stand against two states that violated the rules, and while that has not been easy, if you don't stand up to special interests now just imagine how ugly the primary calendar will be in 2012 (and 2011!). All of which brings us to the principle that if we don't want campaigns like Clinton's in 2012, 2016, 2020, etc. then she cannot receive the nomination in 2008. And there is a clear way to prevent that.
Two ways, actually, and the first and most likely way is that Barack Obama wins the nomination. I am an Obama supporter, and I still believe the most likely scenario is an Obama nomination and win in the general election. But if we want to change the behavior of the Clinton campaign, they should understand what happens in the unlikely case that the Clinton campaign pushes Obama's negatives to the level where he can no longer win.
Al Gore. Oh, it could be theoretically be John Kerry, but we are in the fortunate situation where in Al Gore there is a Democratic party leader who is clearly ready on day one, has actually won the popular vote in a Presidential election, and has improved his reputation subsequently Gore's not as able a campaigner as Obama or Clinton, and he may have less fire-in-the-belly, but the principle is that bad behavior shall not be rewarded, and Gore may be the most obvious compromise. The Clinton campaign needs to understand the the Obama delegates, the remaining super-delegates, and the majority of the Democratic Party will not let her be rewarded for bad behavior. Otherwise, we are going to go through this all over again in 2016.
