Hard as it is to believe, Peggy Noonan displays more than her usual banality by writing:
"But has he [Barack Obama] ever gotten misty-eyed over ... the Wright Brothers and what kind of country allowed them to go off on their own and change everything? How about D-Day, or George Washington, or Henry Ford, or the losers and brigands who flocked to Sutter's Mill, who pushed their way west because there was gold in them thar hills? There's gold in that history. John McCain carries it in his bones."
Given their age, I would imagine that John McCain's stiff old bones carries a great deal around with them. It never occurred to the white and privileged Noonan that Obama carries more history in his young bones than her stifled mind can conceive. I'll conceive it for her:
"But has John McCain ever gotten misty-eyed over ... Harriet Tubman and what kind of countrymen helped her to go off on her own and liberate thousands of slaves? How about Chateau-Thierry, or Martin Luther King, or Duke Ellington, or the disenfranchised and dispossessed who flocked to Selma, who pushed their way there because they believed in the promise of America? There's gold in that history. Barack Obama carries it in his bones."
