I'm a young baby boomer. When in my teens, I remember feeling sorry for Russians. The media was controlled by the government.(I found this appalling.) The gov. lied to them. They couldn't travel. If they wanted to travel from one place to another, they had to show an ID. They even printed erroneous maps and placed rivers where they didn't belong. They were brainwashed with propaganda. I remember the rosy cheeked children, with their clear blue eyes and fair hair.It scared me to death; these beautiful children would be brainwashed like in a science fiction movie.
In high school, I read a book in which the author said the US and Russia had much in common and the US was looking at itself in the mirror. Of course I though the idea ridiculous.
We were better than them! We had freedom of speech. We were one nation under God, indivisible with justice for all. We didn't have any propaganda. We were working for equality. Freedom for all. That's why we went to Vietnam. That's why my neighbor,a skinny 17 year old, just out of high school, died two months later, after stepping on a mine. Or why my boy friend came back an empy shell, lifeless. So many young boys died in vain, for a lie. Our gov. wasn't perfect or quite truthful, but as a people, we made progress. At least we had habeas corpus.
Fast forward to the present. We need to wake up America! We are at a crossroad. Our gov. has suspended habeas corpus, tortures and listens in our conversations. Our country has become too militarized. It is becoming the heart and soul of our country. Our media has been Foxitised. (I've given up tv.) Desperate for real news, I turn to the BBC,blogs, even television Azteca. The MSM has joined our gov. and corporations to feed us propaganda and lies. We are losing our Constitution. Gradually, one tiny piece will be torn away until we don't remember it. I am also very concerned about the Supreme court. They are not there serve the people, but gov. and corporations. All the power that Bush has assigned the executive office scares me.
Sometimes I don't recognize America or my people. Why have we become so passive? Why are there so many racists? Why have we become so intolerable to other races,to other's religious believes,or different cultures? If the 1st Amendement doesn't apply too ALL, then America is NOT a Democracy.
Are we becoming the Russians?
If we have a desire to save this country, we better get our heads straight, reason, think, unite, look beyond race and vote for Obama. He's our last hope.
No pun intended- the other two candidates want more wars.
