Outrage piles on outrage. This is really jimstaro's turf, more than mine, but it needs highlighting.
The story (as reported by the Washington Post) in a nutshell: over the last seven years more than 200 US troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq were processed by a Delaware company billboarding itself as the Friends Forever Pet Cremation Service.
When an officer escorted the body of a comrade to this outside contractor and became upset, the whole thing blew open. Now the Air Force, which flies the bodies into Dover AFB, promises to "use only crematory facilities that are co-located with licensed funeral homes."
The most telling line in the story follows directly:
Military officials said they are concerned that the new requirements, such as that the crematory be located with a funeral home, could slow the cremation process.
Translation: We've got more bodies coming back than we know what to do with.
Okay, one more time for the slow ones--think about who really supports the troops. Is it the Senators and Representatives who say "supporting the troops" is why they not only keep voting Bush every off-budget billion he asks for, but actually want to raise him $70 billion?
Or is the everyday people around the country fighting, five years on, to bring them home, to bring them all home, from this pointless meatgrinder of a war?
Please, take a stand with that second crew. This week, take some action to end the war. This Friday is Iraq Moratorium Day #9. That would be a good time to do something.
