If there is any doubt as to why the Republicans are tanking faster than a lead weight tossed overboard, then look no further as to what keeps Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania up at night. Yes, his priorities are not the war, healthcare, gas crisis, home mortage debacle or the detioriating economy, but rather Spygate. What is Spygate, well if If you are not a sports person, let me fill you in below the fold.
Spygate involves the allegation that the New England Patriots illegally taped practice sessions of the St. Louis Rams years ago prior to when they met in the Super Bowl. The NFL Commissioner in all of this has little evidence to pursue any further investigation in this affair and New England has already been fined and penalized for illegal videotaping during other NFL games.
A recent article in the NY Daily News this past weekend briefly questions Specter's priorities.
Sen. Arlen Specter just won't let go of SpyGate, which is being portrayed by many as an unfortunate case of misplaced passion. And maybe it is. The country is in a war it needs to get out of, gas prices are on the way to $5 a gallon, the economy is headed toward a recession and foreclosures are setting records. Now, Specter wants Roger Goodell to commission his own independent George Mitchell-style investigation into SpyGate. And if he doesn't, Specter says it will be up to Congress "to investigate and take corrective action."
Why then does Specter seem to want to pursue an investigation that the NFL itself is pretty much poised to abandon at this point?
Specter, who has a history of jabbing at the NFL, insisted to Boston radio station WEEI on Friday that he has "not neglected my Senate business" by questioning Goodell and SpyGate, but there is no indication he's ready to let this go. Why would he? He's got a new book and all this publicity can't hurt sales. Or maybe he just wants Goodell to hand over the Super Bowl trophy the Patriots own for beating the Eagles.
After reading this article and thinking back to John McCain's own investigation into steroid use in baseball, I think I know where the Republicans priorities lie and it is clearly not with the American people. Is it any wonder that these guys are going to get clobbered in this next election. They are clearly out of touch with the priorities of most people and instead waste their time on steroid and videotaping "scandals". With all the things they can work on, with all the real problems that everyday people face, with all the help many of us need from our government, this is the best these guys can offer. I believe the word pathetic pretty much describes my thoughts on all of this.
Here is the link to the full article. Unfortunately, I find the writer not too harsh on Specter, although he does bring up some good questions about his priorities.
