This is going to be short and sweet.
For the life of me, I could not comprehend why Hillary Clinton, as meticulous and calculated a politician as we have seen, would choose to catapult the RFK reference into the media firestorm.
Then it suddenly hit me.
What if Hillary is so afraid of the political symbolism of the Cardoza 40 defecting from her to Obama that she suddenly felt she needed to create a plausible justification that she can use to keep other superdelegates, and more importantly her working class supporters whose children still have bikes to sell, from giving up on her campaign?
There is little question in my mind that she made the RFK statement knowing full well how she would backtrack on it:
I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I was just referring to a historical fact. That’s why I emphasized the word "June" instead of the word "assassinated!"
She knows the media will mostly go along with that explanation, which keeps her supporters in line after shrugging it off as in innocent gaffe.
And then, when the Cardoza 40 start peeling away to Obama, she can tell her supporters that they are just "making a mountain out of a molehill."
