Lost in the dizziness of the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary is how badly the DNC needs money. I’m guilty – money that I would have sent to the DNC is being funneled to Barack Obama until he wins the nomination.
Unfortunately for Howard Dean and the DNC, their Republican counterparts have ten times the amount of cash on hand. With the sheer amount of money being raised by the candidates this election cycle, I think people are starting to overlook just how badly the party needs some love, too.
I propose we do something about it tomorrow.
Al Gore is headlining a fundraiser for the DNC that will bring together Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s biggest financial backers for a $28,000 a plate dinner. Obviously contributing $28,000 for a dinner with Gore and Dean is well beyond the realm of fiscal responsibility for a lot of us kossaks, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t help out the DNC by floating a little cash to let them know that the Grassroots is paying attention and wants to help.
My suggestion? Let’s throw our own online DNC Fundraiser. Only instead of one $28,000 contribution, I propose the following:
For the high school students who have trouble making ends meet: $2.81
For the college students who are working this summer to pay for books and beer: $28.01
For the young professionals who can contribute more comfortably: $280.01
For the folks who just won the lottery: $2,800.01
For the people fortunate enough to contribute more/actually attend the event: $28,000.01
Or, as suggested in the comments, any contribution you can afford with 28¢ tacked on the end.
The contribution form is located here. Please consider giving to the DNC. And, as always, remember that Democracy Bonds make great gifts. ;-)
