Space shuttle Discovery just made a picture perfect lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida on its way to the International Space Station to pick up an astronaut and deliver a new Japanese Lab. They will make repairs to 3 systems.
I remember riding a Greyhound Bus across Florida when the first Mercury mission launched. The driver stopped the bus, and we all piled out to stand on the side of the road to watch the miracle. I have never lost that feeling of pride and awe. Human beings are capable of amazing things.
These launches, Phoenix, little Spirit and Opportunity still chugging along almost 4 years after their dead date, and yet another shuttle launch, all comprise my religious moments.
Watching live, on TV is breath taking.
Fare well, Columbia.
