There hasn't been a superdelegate thread for a while a number of new updates have occurred tonight, so I thought I would start a new thread.
Today Obama received a steady stream of Super Delegate endorsements throughout the day. He received the endorsement of 7 Superdelegates in total today. However, three of those SDs are from MI/FL, who only receive half a vote each. This gives Obama a total of 5.5 SD votes today. He also received the endorsement of 2 FL Edwards pledged delegates, which brings his total delegate endorsement number to +6.5. This brings Obama's magic number down from 46 to 39.5.
Obama received the endorsement of:
Connecticut State Party Chair Nancy DiNardo
Virginia DNC member Jerome Wiley Segovia
Michigan DNC member Brenda Lawrence*
Michigan DNC member Lu Battaglieri*
Florida DNC member Janee Murphy*
Washington DNC member David McDonald
SC Representative (and House Majority Whip) Jim Clyburn
*Gets 1/2 a vote due to R&B sanctions.
For her part, Clinton received the endorsements of 2 Superdelegates today:
Louisiana Party Chair Chris Whittington
New York DNC member Irene Stein.
While today was a steady drip of superdelegates, it looks like the flood of superdelegates will come tomorrow. As Kos reported earlier tonight, most of the 17 remaining undeclared Senators are planning to endorse Obama sometime this week:
Most of the seventeen Democratic senators who have remained uncommitted throughout the primaries will endorse Barack Obama for president this week, CNN has learned.
Sources familiar with discussions between Obama supporters and these senators tell CNN’s Gloria Borger that the senators will wait until after the South Dakota and Montana primaries to announce their support for Obama.
Two sources familiar with the sessions said the endorsements will come sometime later this week.
No information is given on how many, if any, or those Senators will endorse tomorrow, but look for their endorsements to start trickling out through the rest of the week.
The house looks more likely to produce a flood tomorrow. Led by Rep Clyburn, up to 34 of the uncommitted House members are planning to endorse Obama by Wednesday, including up to 18 tomorrow.
Buzz on the Capitol Hill suggests that has many as 34 of the undeclared superdelegates residing in the House will endorse Obama by Wednesday. As many as 18 of these 34 -- many of them elected to Congress in the last four years -- will come out for Obama tomorrow so he can edge closer to his magic number before the vote counting ends in South Dakota and Montana. The biggest Obama get in the House to date will come tomorrow when House Dem Caucus Chairman Jim Clyburn officially declares.
With some additional SDs declaring either tomorrow during the day or right after the polls close in MT and SD, along with the pledged delegates earned from MT and SD, could give Barack enough delegates to take the stage in Minnesota as the projected (officially by the networks) winner of the Democratic nomination for president of the United states.
UPDATE: According to the AP, Rep. John Spratt (SC) will also announce his endorsement with Rep. Clyburn tomorrow.
Two Democrats also said Rep. John Spratt of South Carolina would join Clyburn in making an endorsement.
For now, I am going to hold off updating the total numbers until DemConWatch counts this endorsement as official.
UPDATE X2: From Politico: Obama supporter Claire McCaskill says that she's spoken to 10 uncommitted SDs who say they will endorse Obama tomorrow.
"I think tomorrow will be a very big day. I’ve spoken to 10 uncommitteds, and they’ve said yes, they’ll be committing [to Obama], and they’ll be committing sometime tomorrow. "
The magic number has "been shrinking so quickly," McCaskill said.
