I caught about 3 minutes of a John McSame town hall meeting and that's all it took before seeing his first lie. I understand that the right and the left are going to vehemently disagree about the effectiveness of the surge and whether there's legitimate progress in Iraq. But Iran? That's a different story.
McSame was listing what the upside for staying the course in Iraq was. His first was that instead of having one of the most brutal dictators in history (overstatement) in Saddam Hussein in power, we have a flawed but functioning democracy in Iraq (dubious). But his second assertion was that we have reduced the influence of the Iranians. Even if that were true, his first comparison was pre-war to post-war. No such comparison can be made with respect to Iran. Iran had zero influence in pre-war Iraq. Zero. Any influence that they have now is completely our fault. It's definitely not the worst lie ever told, and certainly not the worst lie that he has personally told, but it's intent was definitely to confuse the listeners into believing that it's a good thing we went into Iraq because we had to fight Iranian influence. Or maybe he genuinely has no idea that Iran had no pre-war influence in Iraq. I'm not sure which is worse.
