At the end of the classic movie "Sunset Boulevard", Gloria Swanson, a former movie star now aged and long past her prime, makes the throng await her final entrance.
Only the throng is not an adoring public or an awaiting film crew. The throng are the police, awaiting her appearance to arrest her for murder.
But deep in her dementia, she descends the stairs of her home, garishly made up and coiffed in what she imagines to be her former beauty, and informs the officers, "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille."
Today as we are all waiting Hillary Clinton to leave her home to make her concession/endorsement, for some reason, this scene came to mind. Don't ask me why.
But I would like to point out the most significant difference between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, that may be the single most important reason why Hillary lost this campaign.
When Hillary came out with a message, it sounded like it was the result of meetings and conferences with insiders and her closest advisors, informed by polling and marketing.
When Barack came out with a message, it sounded like something he believed.
And now we all await to see what message Hillary issues. I wonder how it will sound.
Perhaps something like "I'm still big. The elected offices got small."
