I think it's great when independent media promote others independent media. This is an independent video news organization, interviewing the founder of an independent news site, who plugs indie bloggers. Who needs the corporate media, we have all we need right here.
I like her idea of the different media issues:
"HUFFINGTON: Yes. I think they're really two separate issues. The ownership, the conglomeration of media, that's what I call the hardware, and the character of journalists, is the software. And I think they're both important. In the book I focus more on the software."
I think this is a good way to talk about media, but I think the hardware is more important. Ownership and political economy shape the media much more than practices. Or rather, practices are shaped by ownership and political economy more broadly. It is very hard for a corporation to do good journalism because they do not have a public interest, or even a social, mandate. They, also need to make a profit, which is often, counter to public interest media.
building independent media is more effective than complaining about journalists who work in the corporate big media - they do not have control over their work.
