Yesterday, Lindsey Graham, who wants a constitutional amendment to remove habeas corpus from people on American soil, said this:
...he is concerned that detainees will shop for sympathetic judges while challenging issues including their treatment, food and lodging.
"I thought habeas corpus was just the right to demand to know why you're in jail," my dad said to me after reading that article.
"Yup."
"So why is he saying this stuff about demanding better food?"
"Well, he's probably hoping people don't know what habeas corpus means."
"So he's appealing to his constituency."
Well, yeah, if you think your electorate is stupid.
Lindsey Graham is one of the worst and I'm not surprised by this utterly ignorant rhetoric. What I am surprised is what I read the next day:
[McCain was] standing next to Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a military lawyer who was one of his key partners in drafting [Guantanamo] legislation in 2006, and is now one of his frequent traveling partners[.]
Obama was telling me McCain is a stand-up guy! He opposes torture and fought bravely in Vietnam. So why does he associate with the worst of the worst?
I am somewhat of a centrist politically, but McCain must be a lot worse than I thought...
[Graham]: "Americans are going to be shocked to find that that mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, now has the same legal standing as an American. [Heaven forbid we allow people a fair trial on our soil!] What does this mean to America? It means we’re not as safe as we used to be."
More fearmongering crap. My dad will tell you that. We're not stupid. And we're committed to do something about this.
