Today, beginning at 5:01 p.m. California will begin issuing marriage licences and performing civil ceremonies to same sex couples all over the state.
After ten years together, my wife and I will be able to finally get legally married.
Celebrate with me below!
We went to our pride event yesterday, and there was a representative of the Country Clerk's office. They had marriage licence applications and were making appointments on the spot. So, we made an appointment for 6:00 p.m. PST!
Counties have been training volunteers to perform ceremonies all over California, and the clerk's offices are staying open late, at least in my county, every night this week.
In addition, the UU Congregation I attend will be sending volunteers to the clerk's office to congratulate couples as they enter and exit the building.
I cannot tell you how amazing this feels after all these years: after being used as a wedge issue in ballot initiative after ballot initiative; after having my hopes up only to have them dashed time and again; finally, after ten years of "commitment ceremonies" and "domestic partnership" (or, as John McCain likes to call it "entering into legal arrangements), my lovely partner and I will be legally married in the state of California.
This is monumental, historic, epic, breathtaking. . .Please celebrate this moment with all of California's gay and lesbians who will be a little closer to equal today.
Let's keep this as an open thread, not for my benefit, but for all my queer brothers and sisters who will be getting married in California!
p.s. I'm not shy: rec it up!
Cheers!
