Rudy Giuliani has been on the war-path on behalf of John McCain these last couple days, including appearing on virtually every morning show this morning to say things like:
Giuliani repeated his message, saying Obama favors a "defensive" response to terror. Said Clinton was right when she called him "irresponsible and naive."
This is all comes in response to Obama's praising of the trials and incarceration of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing terrorists. That statement alone set off a fury of attacks from the McCain campaign that Obama sees this as a "law enforcement issue," something Rudy picked up pretty fast in his attacks. So, wait for it...
Here's what Rudy said in 1994 (via TPM) in response to the convictions of the World Trade Center bombing terrorists:
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani declared that the verdict "demonstrates that New Yorkers won't meet violence with violence, but with a far greater weapon -- the law."
Oops. Rudy Giuliani, once again demonstrating that on this, and every other issue, he has no credibility whatsoever. This quote directly contradicts everything McCain's chief surrogate on this issue has been saying. The McCain people think they are pushing a winning issue: let's prove them wrong.
Please, everyone, take some action and distribute Rudy's 1994 quote to as many blogs and media outlets as you possibly can.
The net effect will be to put McCain's team on the defensive at the very time they think they have an issue to be on the offense about. Oops!
UPDATE: This is what happens when you have a candidate who knows how to use Google. From the Obama campaign to the press:
In an e-mail, entitled, "Giuliani v Giuliani: 1993 World Trade Center Bombing Case," the Obama campaign points out that in 1993, Giuliani said at the time, per the New York Times, March 5, 1994: "Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani declared that the verdict ‘demonstrates that New Yorkers won't meet violence with violence, but with a far greater weapon -- the law.’"
From the DNC:
The DNC takes its shot at Giuliani with an e-mail with a title, parroting Joe Biden’s Greatest Debate Hits: "Rudy, ‘Noun, verb, 9/11’ Giuliani returns."
"Democrats are not going to be lectured to on security by the mayor who failed to learn the lessons of the 1993 attacks, refused to prepare his own city’s first responders for the next attack, urged President Bush to put his corrupt crony in charge of our homeland security, and was too busy lobbying for his foreign clients to join the Iraq Study Group," DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney said. "Rudy Giuliani, can echo the McCain campaign’s false and misleading attacks, but he can’t change the fact that John McCain is promising four more years of President Bush’s flawed and failed policies on everything from energy security and the economy to the war in Iraq."
