The comment of McCain's adviser, Charlie Black, who claimed that a terrorist attack on the American soil before November will help his boss as the assasination of Benazir Bhutto did last December had received McCain's strenous rebuke. But it was McCain himself who said the same thing after the assasination.
This was what McCain said back in December according to the LA Times:
My theme has been throughout this campaign that I am the one with the experience, the knowledge and the judgment," McCain said. "So perhaps [the assassination] may serve to enhance those credentials or make people understand that I've been to Waziristan, I know Musharraf, I can pick up the phone and call him.
This was what poor Charlie said:
The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an "unfortunate event," says Black. "But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us." As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," says Black.
