Here is a copy of a note I submitted to Senator Kohl's website. He is my Senator, as is Russ Feingold. What a difference between the two. I can hardly believe they are from the same state and the same party.
Dear Senator Kohl,
I read that you voted with the Republicans to defeat an amendment removing telecom amnesty from the FISA bill.
If this is correct, I must say I am very disappointed that you support amnesty for corporations that knowingly and willingly supported the Bush administration's illegal wiretapping program.
Maybe you should take a walk over to Senator Feingold's office and ask him to explain the Fourth Amendment to you. Here is a copy for your reference:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
I urge you to support the FISA amendment and do what is right to protect the privacy rights of your constituents in Wisconsin and, indeed, for all Americans.
If you choose to respond electronically, I hope it occurs to you that your communication might be intercepted by the FBI or CIA with help from the telecom companies whose wires are relaying your message. Isn't that ironic?
Kohl has run on the slogan "Nobody's Senator but Yours!", a reference to his wealth and self-funded campaigns. Perhaps his next slogan should be "Nobody's Senator but AT&T's!",
I will post the almost certainly canned response when I receive it, although the truth is I could probably write it myself right now with 99% accuracy
