I'm announcing my candidacy, right here, right now on Big Orange, the site that has done more to change politics & change America than any other. Anyway, it is an elected (but unpaid) position but this is true grass roots politics. I'm running to be the Ward 6 Committeeman for the Democratic State Committee on the DC for Obama endorsed Obama4UnityBeats McCain slate in the District of Columbia, http://www.obama4unitybeatsmccain.co... The petitions will be filed on Wednesday. The election is on September 9 as part of the DC Democratic Primary. For some reason we are doing the primary for local offices seperately from the presidential primary, held on Feb. 12. The DC Democratic State Committee is the governing body of the local Democratic Party.
Ward 6 is greater Capitol Hill and Southwest Washington, Technically, if I win, I'll be representing the workplace of the greats and clowns that the rest of the USA elects to represent you in Congress. Of course, in DC we don't have a vote in Congress -- we are taxed without representation. We are still called a "state" committee, that is because according to Democratic Party rules, we are treated as a state. Thank you Dems!
Under DC's arguably bizaerre rules, candidates for the Democratic State Committee run together as a slate and we get to call ourselves whatever we want. I'm running with a slate called "Obama 4 Unity Beats McCain" -- we started as a small grass roots group back in late December of 2006 that became DC for Obama and I was one of it's first members. I went out of "state" to volunteer for Obama on four trips to New Hampshire and one to Missouri. Frankly, for the most part, we are the upstarts in DC politics running against the more established & entrenched group that dominates the party appratus.
Everyone knows that Barack Obama will carry DC. Everyone knows that Job One for us is to volunteer in Virginia and turn our part to turn Virginia Blue. We are in this for the long haul. We know that Barack Obama will need our support to move beyond symbolic politics & accomplish real change. We hope that this becomes a movement that transcends a campaign. We hope to be part of reforming the Democratic party nomination process. We hope to be part of the new generation of leadership. We just hope...
And if you vote in Washington, DC's Ward 6 -- I need your support. After going out and gathering the petition signatures to run I do have a newfound respect for politicians. Grass roots politics is very hard work. To be honest, if I knew how hard it was going to be I'm not sure I'd have done it. Please vote on Sept. 9. Turnout will be low. If you vote in DC please support the full Obama4Unity beatsMcCain slate: http://www.obama4unitybeatsmccain.co...
