Am I a flip-flopper? Let's look at the tape.
- When talking to a friend about a movie that we both liked I make the comment "I liked everything except the ending." Later that day, I meet someone who didn't like the movie at all and I say "Well, the ending was pretty bad... but I liked the rest."
- I'm interviewing for a job as a newspaper editor and they ask me about my previous job as a teacher. "Well, the job helped me to further understand English grammar. If you don't understand it, you can't explain it. And I regularly had to correct people." The next day I'm interviewing for a job as a customer service rep and when asked the same question, I say "I had to do a lot of problem solving as a teacher. Sometimes students can't articulate the areas where they're having trouble and I had to help them through it. I learned to be very patient and tried to find unique areas where each person could improve."
- I'm studying architecture and I've decided to apply for an exchange program in Spain. My main motivation is that I want to go with my girlfriend who's already been approved. When I talk to my mom about the idea, I tell her "It's important for me to see Gaudi up close and personal if I'm going to become a good architect."
- I am severely underpaid at my job. People at other companies get paid 10 percent more for doing 20 percent less work. I'd love nothing more than to march into my boss's office and say "pay me more or I'm outta heare." But instead when I actually have time to talk with him, I say "I'm covering two positions here and it would be difficult for you to find another person who can do what I do. If I were to leave the company, you would need to hire two people to make up for it. It would be cheaper for you to just keep me here and give me a raise than to hire two people."
- I'm trying to organize a party. When I'm talking to men I say "You should come, there'll be a lot of girls there." When I'm talking to girls, I say "You should come, there'll be a lot of guys there."
So what do you think? Is any of these a flip flop?
P.S. In case you haven't guessed it, this is an analogy. Think Obama.
*** Update
If you vote for an option that's not none of the above, can you provide your reasoning for why it's a flip-flop? Just curious.
