The Cook Political Report has upgraded (or in my opinion downgraded the incumbent)CA 46 from "Solid republican" to "Likely Republican". This is the result on a major effort by Debbie Cook to give the District an opportunity for change.
Debbie Cook, the mayor of Huntington Beach, and her volunteers have worked tirelessly to show the people of the district (very gerrymandered) which includes Orange County, Long Beach, and Rancho Palos Verdes that a strong environmentalist, with strong ties to the area. can be successful.
Quoting from Mayor Cook's email -
The upgrade represents the only movement in solid Republican districts on the West Coast. Notably, it's the first Orange County congressional race to be considered competitive since Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez's 1996 race against incumbent Bob Dornan. Movement in the Cook Political Report (no relation to the candidate) is considered significant, because it is closely watched by political insiders, the media and the national politcal parties. California's 46th was one of only 30 races to be upgraded in solid Republican districts across the country. The Cook Report noted a "poor national climate for the GOP," and given the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's financial advantage, said this was a race "worth keeping tabs on.
And for those of you who think that Orange County is forever red, we democrats marched in the 4th of July parade and got a lot of noisy cheers!!!
