This morning on CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer", McCain supporter and potential vice presidential candidate Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina could not come up with one substantial difference between Bush's and McCain's positions on the economy.
It was amazing, hilarious, and frankly embarrassing to watch Gov. Sanford stumble and fumble while he tried to come up with something, anything, for minute after minute.
CNN has not posted the official video or transcript yet, but my own transcript is below:
Update: I found the video! Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/...
Wolf Blitzer: Are there any significant economic differences between what, ah, the Bush administration has put forward over these many years as opposed to now what John McCain supports?
Gov. Sanford: Um, yeah. I mean, for instance, take, ya know, umm, uh, the -- take for instance, the issue of, uh, of, umm, (taps finger on table twice). I'm drawing a blank -- um, I hate when I do that, particularly on television. Uh, but, uh, take -- take for instance, uh, the contrast on Nafta. I mean, ah, ah -- I think that the bigger issue is credibility in where one is coming from, on -- are they consistent where they come from. John McCain has consistently stood against earmarks, ummmm, uh, throughout his tenure in the United States Senate. Uh, regrettably the president has not been exactly busy with his veto pen on earmarks. I mean there's just one contrast alone. It's particularly --
Wolf Blitzer: Let me get back to -- you raise the issue of Nafta. I don't see -- he's a huge supporter of free trade, John McCain. The Bush administration supports free trade. I don't see a big difference between the two.
Gov. Sanford: No, no, I was going to go to a point, ya know, which is -- I was going to go to a point, which is what you'd want is consistency with regard to that position.
It was truly incredible to see how badly the McCain campaign is failing to draw any contrast at all between McCain and the Most Unpopular President of All Time (TM) on the issue that voters consistently say is the most important to them in this election.
The Obama campaign needs to get this video and make it into an ad immediately!
