in response to the July 21, 2008 cover. I also address this to those that believe I missed the 'satirical intent' of the cover.
I am thoroughly offended by the cover featuring Michelle and Barack Obama and it should be pulled from the market. This sensationalist trash is in extremely poor taste!
When an historical retrospective of the legacy of the first viable African American candidate for president is researched by students this cover will prove to be more shameful than Don Imus’ comment on the Rutgers Ladies Basketball Team. You should burden yourselves with the task of reporting the truth and progressive thinking instead of perpetuating false rumors and bigoted stereotypes.
The African Americans’ modern day struggle is that we must endure the depiction of our best and brightest as being undesirables. Was The New Yorker sending the message? That no matter our achievements and attempts to assimilate into the American dream, The New Yorker is dedicated to reminding us that we will forever be the bud of racist jokes.
How did you miss putting afros on the Obama children in stripper clothes on a pole in the background, cotton pickers outside of the window and a noose hanging in the tree?
Every thousand issues of this magazine that sells is a death of thousand cuts to the self esteem and admiration of the newest generation of African Americans that believe they can and another round of disappointment to the elders.
But it’s a joke, right?
We don't see things as they are; we see things as we are. ~Talmud I see Obama in The White House!
