latimes.com:
House Democratic leaders said the proceedings would not be about Bush's impeachment, a first step in the Constitution's process of a removing a president from office.
The crimes are under review by our crime fighting congress! Oh goody, more investigations that have no result, other than casting further doubt on the notion that we are a nation of laws.
It is as if, one fine sunny day in school, a bully went rampaging through the halls, breaking into lockers, beating up students, and the hall monitor snuck over to one of the victims and whispered, "Excuse me, did you notice if he had the requisite hall pass?"
Effing hell (and by effing I don't mean FISA) what are you doing? What is keeping you from meaningfully investigating the extent of the crimes, let alone prosecuting for the crimes committed? And such crimes, done by such a truant? What is keeping you from fulfilling your constitutional role?
Why, only the overwhelming attribute of the Democratic political animal. Don't underestimate the enduring fear of our Democratic leadership. The Republicans never do.
But what kind of fear is it? If it's fear of a political backlash for beginning impeachment proceedings in an election year, then that's not just paranoia, it's memory loss! Trumpeting the threat level around election time has been an effective strategy for the Republicans, that is until recently. Co-opting that strategy, but this time for the real threat, would be much more likely to result in a total devastation of the Republican brand than it's revival, or a backlash.
Maybe it's a fear of being implicated? Perhaps, but here I'm vindictive. I would gladly see those involved lose their seats in order to make way for better representatives. Let's have a purge! Chances are the Imperial Presidency stands to lose more than the Feckless Congress. Unfortunately, here as in many elections, people would be voting against the candidate they dislike most.
Maybe it's a fear of a different magnitude altogether. It's a fear of us, what might occur if the people find out the extent of the crimes committed under this administration. Our power to enact change might not stop at the vote then, and few politicians in power want that...
So, we are thrown a bone. This weekend, Pelosi will deliver a speech, and she'll let everyone know that she's cross with Bush. She will go so far as to call Bush a miserable, total failure, echoing the opinion of myself and others five years ago, as the bombs were falling. Congratulations. I'm sure more speeches will follow, none which will raise to the level necessary to offset the precedent of this presidency. Maybe in five more years you and the rest of our Democratic disappointment will approximate what we needed now, in 2008.
The letter is a bit outdated, but use this form to push your representatives and the House Judiciary Committee on impeachment hearings.
