Being a member of the military I believe I am in a unique position to state what I hear when John McCain's spouts his latest tripe about the SURGE-(TM).
As a Soldier, what I hear when John McCain says, "I supported the surge"
- "I supported 15 months deployments for our Soldiers"
- "I supported extending our already over-extending Soldiers and their equipment"
- "I supported completely ignoring Afghanistan and other US interests solely for the sake of Iraq"
- "I supported sending more Soldiers into the meat grinder of war"
- "I supported sending Soldiers on their third, fourth, and fifth deployments to meet my still unclear goals for victory"
- "I supported burning up even more vehciles, helicopters, weapons, and other equipment at an even faster rate"
- "I supported causing 1173 deaths of American servicemen and women in Iraq" (Jan 07-Jun 08)
- "I supported the further sectarian division of Iraq"
- "I supported spending countless more billions on Iraq to the detriment of care of the horribly wounded and disfigured Soldiers being ignored at home and other domestic issues"
- "I supported so overextending our combat units, that at the completion of the surge, there will be no American ground forces available to respond to ANY situation ANYWHERE in the world"
I guess John McCain doesn't quite think through all the things his desperate clinging to the surge actually means. If Senator McCain wants to take sole credit for devising the surge, he needs to take credit for all its attendant death and destruction and sorrow. If it's truly his policy, he should be happy to take credit for all of the above things and the others left unsaid that resulted from the surge.
