Brian Williams is scooping himself this morning on Morning Joe, summarizing his interview with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. What he's saying isn't very detailed, but if you listen carefully, there may be a real victory for Obama (believe it or not) in what happened yesterday.
Here's the link to the preview.
Williams is reporting that for the first time since the 1970s the Iranians are suggesting that they may see a way to work with the United States. Even Joe and Buchanan are willing to admit that the White House policy has completely changed...
And the policy has changed in such a way that Obama's position has been vindicated. Obama has been pushing for face-to-face talks all along, and that's what seems to be working. It's going to be impossible for McCain to hit Obama for the position of sitting down with Iran.
Ahmadinejad also said (loose translation) that nuclear weapons were "so Twentieth Century..."
Buchanan: "The military option...has been taken off the table by the United States...and he's probably told the Israelis that they are not to do it, either."
Todd: "President Bush has moved closer to Obama and away from McCain..."
Now, we can't breathe a sigh of relief about any prognostication that Pat Buchanan makes. But that interview is certainly worth watching.
It seems clear that Obama's trip was Earth-changing in more ways than one. He may have telegraphed a message of continuity in policy, but not in a military sense. Just as he did last week, McCain must be hopping around on one foot. What position to take today?
