Some of the other threads today had me thinking. I think Obama could turn the tables on the debates very easily.
Obama could setup Townhalls or debates (whatever you want to call them) with other 3rd party candidates. Barr and Nader would be fine. Leave an empty chair for McCain, and challenge him to show up.
More after the fold...
This is easily sellable to the media. With the increase in independant registrations, it would be easy to suggest that they deserve a voice in the debates as well. It would definately beg media attention, so I'm sure any of the media channels would cover it. McCain would be hard pressed not to show up. Afterall, he has felt left out, right?
Sure, this is risky for Obama. However, there are possible gains :
- It would help undermine the anti-Obama vote going to McCain. Recent polling shows that Obama's lead increases in 4 way matchups - which to me suggests that the anti-Obama vote is keeping McCain in the race.
- Nader's far left wing philosphy would bring Obama's more mainstream approach into clearer view.
- All 3 being anti-Bush after 9/11 on civil liberties and the Iraq War would play against McCain. McCain would really be forced to explain his policies.
I'm sure there are more. Thoughts?
