I attended the University of Dayton, a Catholic school in Dayton, Ohio. UD was a wonderful place, and the ethos at UD was all about leadership through service to others and to God. The priests, brothers, sisters, and others who I had as professors and mentors exemplified the noble mission of the school. Politically, it was middle of the road, without some outspoken conservatives but also many liberal priests, brothers and nuns. I felt at home as an old school Democrat when I graduated in 2002. I had a conservative housemate that I argued with for hours on end over beers about the inheritance tax, but we were still great friends.
So it was to my disappointment but not surprise that Bob Schaffer's son, who attends UD, wrote the following http://www.daytondailynews.com/...
DAYTON — University of Dayton officials said Tuesday, Aug. 5, they are considering charging student Justin Schaffer for a violation of the Standards of Behavior for posting offensive information on his Facebook page.
The 19-year-old son of Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer of Colorado on Monday apologized for an entry that had the words "High Five ... Who's Gay" over a photo of a waving Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. It also had a picture of the Pyramids with the words "Slavery Gets (expletive) Done." UD said the Code of Conduct standard calls for students to respect all members of the community and the community at large.
Gay-bashing and racism. Throw in some illegal immigrant hysteria, and this seems typical Colorado Republican Party stuff, and one of the reasons that Obama is going to steamroll McCain in Colorado and Mark Udall will beat the piss out of Schaffer. There are no solutions offered by Republican candidates, just hate, stupidity, and pride in their ignorance.
However, UD is not amused:
Cilla Bosnak Shindell, director of media relations at UD, said potential penalties for Code of Conduct violations range from a reprimand to probation, suspension or expulsion.
Bob Schaffer claims that he and his wife have provided "firm punishment" for their son. Heh.
I don't think it is dirty campaigning to mention the fact that the adult son of a Senate candidate chooses to call Obama gay or promote slavery, obviously in reference to American Slavery against African Americans. UD didn't teach him this, nor his dad, who also went to UD. This looks like the results from hanging around too many Colorado Republicans growing up, such as Marilyn Musgrave and Tom Tancredo.
