After many long months Tennessee's primary election was held last night, and it is my great honor to be representing the Democratic Party as a candidate for the United States Senate. It would not have been possible without the thousands of people who have aided our cause, who recognized, as I did, that it is time for a change in Washington.
This is a march that I embarked upon, not alone, but with the support of countless Tennesseans, Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike. Our shared frustration with Washington's failure to solve our most pressing problems is what motivated to begin this campaign, and it is my belief in our ability to correct course and change direction that will take me through our campaign's final months.
In the Marines we are trained to take the high ground and hold it. That's what we've got to do now; we've got to "Take the Hill" from career politicians who long ago stopped serving the American people, and the people of Tennessee, in order to serve special interests and big corporate cronies.
Their inability to find the solutions to to keep gas prices under control, to keep and add jobs for Americans, to end this misguided war in Iraq, and to fix our failing health care system, are just some of the many reasons why Senators like Lamar Alexander must be sent packing.
The challenges before us are great, and it will take true courage and bold leadership to find the solutions that will lead us into the future as a secure and prosperous people. I am humbled that the people of Tennessee have put their faith in me to help bring about the kind of change we so desperately need, and I can promise you I will serve this country again with honor when I am elected to the United States Senate.
Thank you again for your support, which has been an invaluable asset in this first stage of the campaign. But even as we celebrate today, our task is far from complete. Our eyes now turn to that critical first Tuesday in November, and with your help I know we will celebrate a victory once again on the following Wednesday morning.
