Once or twice a day, I scan CNN's frontpage to look at the headlines of the day, etc. I'd taken note of the fact that Glenn Beck hadn't had something in the "Latest News" column for some time, so I wasn't surprised to log on today and find that he'd finally cooked up something to say about Obama's energy policy.
After reading it over a couple times, I tapped out the following response in the comments window at the bottom of the page:
I'd like to see just where Glenn got the "two-thirds of vehicles already have properly inflated tires" factoid from. He seems eager enough to offer sources in the rest of his commentary.
Also, stop making it sound like those billions of barrels could be plucked out of the ground at a moment's notice to help stem our gas woes. It could be as long as a decade before we begin to see real returns from new drilling, by which time we should already be making a serious swap to other energy sources like solar, wind, and nuclear (yes, even nuclear). It would also be an extraordinary feat of naivete to think that all of this hypothetical new oil is going to stay here for domestic consumption. The best way to not be dependent on foreign oil and the wacky fluctuations of the crude market is to NOT USE GAS.
Oh, thanks for that brilliant strawman argument that shedding a pound or two of weight from your car will have immense fuel economy savings. Because trimming the weight of your car by about a tenth of a percent is going to produce anywhere near the fuel savings of tried-and-tested techniques like proper tire pressure, not speeding, and buying vehicles with higher fuel efficiency, right?
No, simply putting more air in your tires is not going to solve the energy crisis by itself, and "Obama's Energy Plan" doesn't pretend that it will. But it DOES save gas, and it's absolutely painless. Please tell me what part of "check the tire pressure on your car on a regular basis" is "unsustainable": I just did it yesterday, and it took me a whopping three minutes.
Anyways, thanks for yet another page of laughter. I think I'm good for another couple of weeks now.
P.S.: I'll send you a dollar if you drop the pretense of "neither of these candidates thrills me" and admit you're going to vote for McCain in November.
