China may put on a fantastic show, but let's hope that viewers don't lose sight of the bigger picture behind the scenes.
The selection of former 'Lost Boy' Lopez Lomong as the U.S. flag-bearer is a much more important event.
This is my first diary on DailyKos, so please forgive me if I haven't followed proper etiquette for posting.
I read a rec'd diary on the Chinese opening ceremony, and though I wasn't able to see it myself (I'm currently out of the country and don't have access to TV), the photos suggest that the ceremony may have been one of the most spectacularly choreographed sights in history. Kudos to the artists who were responsible for designing and performing the ceremony.
However, as much as I admire the beautiful artwork and the incorporation of China's rich heritage into the show, there's a more important event that doesn't appear to have caught the attention of DailyKos readers (at least, a search for 'Lomong' came up empty). That's why I decided to come out of lurking and post my first diary: this is a more beautiful statement, the democratic election by our U.S. Olympic athletes of former Sudanese 'Lost Boy' Lopez Lomong as the flag-bearer for our team.
The Washington Post sports columnist Thomas Boswell has a couple of well-written pieces about the story. Please check them out and spread the message.
