We have so many insightful and powerful diaries written here at Daily Kos. Our diaries inform, inflame, impassion, and even entertain. We Kossacks have strong voices and an even stronger will to be the change we wish to see in this country.
One of the richest, and perhaps most under-appreciated, areas of thought come in the form of comments attached to these diaries.
Here at Top Comments we strive to recognize and promote the talent of this community by highlighting outstanding comments found throughout the day by the diarist, and through nominations sent to TopComments at gmail dot com by your fellow Kossacks.
These nominations are subjective, and certainly not complete (as no one can read the complete site on a daily basis!). But hopefully they will serve to shine a light where deserved, and to give the reader a good starting point in finding conversation on the site.

Spent some time today checking out some of my earliest TC diaries from the first one on July 3, '06. That first very-lean venture rec'd only 49 comments but things got better. Including this infamous one from exactly two years ago which rec'd over 400 comments and contained a delicious thread started by Armando and Elise, ended by mcjoan. That wasn't my record-high for comments, though - had almost 500 comments on Aug. 22, '06 - that one had a remarkable exchange between Armando and Miss Devore. And rec'd this interesting endorsement:
i love this nightly thread (9+ / 0-)
It is the nightly fun spot at dkos.
Everybody dies alone.

What I found most interesting in reviewing the old diaries was in the comments, noting all the folks that have been scarce hereabouts lately. Here's a few of the early TC-regulars that I've missed seeing / reading here recently:
CSI Bentonville
cowgirl
jlove1982
righteousbabe
rserven
fireflynw
nonnie999
Cronesense
wiscmass
buhdydharma
mentaldebris
lipris
iliketodrum
hyperbolic pants explosion
Boadicaea
besieged by bush
MuffledDrum
John Campanelli
homo neurotic
Sharoney
tiggers thotful spot
Monique Radevu
bic momma
Miss Devore
Hardhat Democrat
Buffalo Girl
Turkana
and too many other names to list.
What's the reason for this list? Well, some are gone from DKos but some are still around but I've missed them. Maybe if I call 'em out, they will come by and say, Heh! Or someone else may have news to share... perhaps they got TR'ed out? Or just had real life intrude on their TC-time?

On to TOP COMMENTS!
From sardonyx:
In KingOneEye's Starve The Beast: The Futility Of Fox News, ericy shows true public service by reducing the presence of Fox News wherever he goes, and telling the rest of us how we can do it ourselves: another way to starve the beast.
In cskendrick's excellent Saturday diary Sifting Through An Eviction, exmearden started a beautiful and thought-provoking thread here that, although that first comment is technically out of eligibility, her eloquent comments downthread here and here are not.

From MKSinSA:
In Susan S's diary calling out the traditional media's geographical ignorance of Hawaii's place as a state of our union, doorguy offers the following insight to the question "If Hawaii wasn't America ... Then why the hell did we go to war when they got bombed ?" The pedant in me wants to point out.

Dfarrah told his (or her) dad to stop by Daily Kos and check it out. Stand Strong goes on red alert in response. Now where did I put my framed picture of Reagan? (Disclaimer: Some of the nicest people I've ever known had such a thing hanging in their house.)
From mem from somerville:
The excitement of the upcoming announcement of the Obama choice for VP sets the hearts and thumbs aflutter, and braggadocio aflow.... (start) here: I know by Stand Strong.
From thatvisionthing:
Hi, I don't know if you can use these, but I have lived on dkos since yesterday and these stand out as a couple of comments ... among many I am grateful to have read: aitchdee's plea to stop and treasure that stone in your shoe before you throw it at the glass house you're living in... I know, not exactly verbatim -- and I'd recommend the diary it's attached to --
And this one by BenjaminOMeara: on dumbfounding hypocrisy. Specific, not meta. Glad somebody said it on a hard day for the Edwardses.

A few I found...

Freedom vs. liberty? The thing about freedom is that it by hannah
What IF McCain chooses Joe Lieberman for Veep? An interesting prospect: At least Joe's easy by Dallasdoc
On the tortured history of 'marriage' in the US, LOL Cali by JeremiahFP reminds us of how far we've come ... and how far we've yet to go.
Some comparative context for the Edwards kerfluffle: exactly... by Left Machiavellian and I was an Edwards supporter and I don't give a f by Judgment at Nuremberg
On the rights of Indigenous people in the US: Thanks for your efforts - the keep up good work by Stuart Heady
