SO I posted a blog on my own myspace page titled "Where's the beef?!  I think I have found it"   About Sentator Obama's record in the Senate...

The response I got is below the fold.  This person is/was a friend of mine from a long, long time ago.  He is also the same person who basically questioned my own christianity and faith in God because I was an Obama supporter.  Nice...right?

Of course you will ignore and not take into account anything said negative about Senator Barack HuSEIN Obama.

Did you know back in Illinois a woman tried to have her baby aborted it survived and then the birthed the baby and yet again it survived a partial birth abortion. They threw the baby into a closet in the hospital to die and a nurse then went and held the dieing child for 3 hours when it finally died. Obama had the nurse prosecuted and put in jail because he said that the nurse impeded on the mothers right to abortion. THAT IS A SICK SICK MAN. And I really anybody who wants him as president should be checked out.

Heres another one. A man breaks into a house he then steels the keys the occupants and leaves. The thief returns days later the owners not realizing their spare set of key were gone and procedes to enter the home with the keys, the owners realize someone is in their home with their kids in the house. The owner gets their handgun and approaches the thief while said thief is getting in thier vehicle in the garage and shoots the man not killing him. Senator Obama then just a state attourney seeks to prosecute the home owner NOT the thief because the owner did not register his gun under a new program for tracking a law that was just passed weeks prior. That man went jail away from his family and sat in jail longer than the thief did. Yeah that's the guy I want as my commader in chief.<</ </p>

Has anybody ever heard any of this? When was Obama a state attorney?  I am just ignorant here?  I would really love to respond intelligently to his postings and will, of course, do some research myself, but didn't know if any of you out there have seen this before.

BTW...don't you just love how these asshat wing nuts like to use BO's middle name.....

Update......loved all the reponses I got from you guys..thanks a bunch.  Here is what I responded back:

Wow...thanks for your most passionate response to my blog.

As soon as I post this I am on my way to my therapist to get, as you so succinctly put it,"checked out" for my obvious mental and moral distress.

I just have one favor to ask of you....can you please provide me with links to the news stories regarding the events above, I would imagine something like this got local news coverage in Illinois? Or even links to the cases that were prosectuted in the state of Illinois?

Also, how could Barack Obama have somebody prosecuted when he wasn't a State prosecutor or state attorney? He practiced civil rights law and never tried a case in Cook County. Below is an article by the Chicago Sun Times about his law career.

Thanks again for your response......

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

He's been repeating this on the radio, too. The best strategy here is to note that Corsi is a racist wingnut who calls Muslims "ragheads" and so forth, and is basically a lunatic. I wouldn't even bother disputing any of his book's content, and just note that the entire thing is a work of fiction and not to be treated seriously.

You could save time by not wasting it on people who believe this kind of crap. But if it's really important to you due to an old acquaintanceship, remind him that there are literally dozens of lies and smears that have gone 'round and 'round the intertubes. Each one has been successfully rebutted, so after a while, even the most anti-Obamanistas - if they have a shred of reason left in their neural net (a big IF, I know) - must agree that the burden of proof lies with the accusers. You could also direct him to the stop the smears pages of Obamas web site, if he's actually interested in, you know, finding out the truth about any of it (link here). Good luck, you'll need it.

Because the world is full of horrible things. Who would believe Ruanda? Or the pointless insanity of Pol Pot? Or that serial killer who kept women imprisoned in his basement in California, and the neighbors didn't know a thing? Yet those things happened. After a while, almost anything seems possible, and so people end up swallowing pure fiction. (It actually happens on the left sometimes, too.)

Some people will believe baseless lies, but can be challenged. Some can't, because they aren't willing to change their minds.  You don't know til you try.  So I think you did the right thing -- you challenged this guy. If this is true, where are the news reports?  So simple, yet often people don't think of it. And you didn't beat up on him a lot -- you just put the ball back in his court and maybe made him think.

Whether you do any more is up to you. But it's not always a waste of time.

the way it's worded:  it doesn't say "You're a terrible,  sinful liar".  It says "you're helping to spread lies",  which leaves your friend the out of saying "But (I believed) it's true!".

The proper response to that is "Well,  it's not.  And you should have checked it before you repeated it".  That casts the person being criticized as someone who made a normal human mistake (which most of the people repeating this crap are),  instead of a conscious Agent of Evil.

I believe it's important to confront these people strongly,  but that it's most productive to do it by saying "What you're doing is bad.  Go forth and sin no more.",  not "You're an evil bastard.  Go to Hell".

Obama was never a prosecutor, and never threw a nurse in jail for "impeding an abortion." This is a lie.

There is a former nurse who went on a crusade seeking a change in Illinois law that would require doctors and hospitals to render medical care to fetuses born alive -- even if they were trying to abort them.

This was the subject of some controversy in the state, and Obama opposed the illinois legislation because he claied it did not contain language similar to a federal statutory provision (whcih he says he supported) makng it clear that the statute did not impede a woman's right to an abortion.

The second item is complete horsehockey as well. It may be referring to some gun control law Obama supported, but teh details are presented in such a distorted manner and devoid of any context, its hard to know what to make of the accusation.

How about launching into some Swiftboating of McCain? Don't worry--you don't need your own facts!

      Did you know?
That while in the Hanoi Hilton, John McCain ripped up an American flag, burned it, and choked a partially birthed fetus with it and that while in that prison, on several occasions, McCain refused to wear a flag pin or recite the words "under God" or even pledge allegiance?
That (and this one is true, a phone in South Carolina told me) John McCain had a black child born out of wedlock, a daughter who is raised a Muslim?
That that out of wedlock child attends a Maddrassa and wears a headscarf?

You see, your friend has freed himself from the burden of facts. I'm not recommending that you do the same, but think of this for a minute: can you imagine the outcry if someone were to Swiftboat John McCain? Look what happened to Wes Clark.

I'm tempted to take a cheap shot about Bush not crashing his plane. That's in really, really poor taste.

Stick to the "leaving his first wife after her car crash" stuff.

Folks that propogate this stuff often do not know how to determine facts from fiction on their own -- they don't have the skills. And they're terrified of being duped. Rethugs take advantage of their mindset readily.

I would start with, "Did you know that Obama wasn't AG?"

These stories are just little twists on the soft on crime rumors that go around about Democrats every election. You can point that out, and you can tell them how Obama isn't soft on crime.

As for the hospital story, it is so ludicrous that you could write 40 pages about why is couldn't possibly have happened.

But when you do point out these things, tell the troll how you know. Teach him something about how tell the difference between a BS story and a credible one.

I know many feel it's a waste of time to try to reason with the people that peddle this stuff and maybe it is but there are some out there that, as the above comment said, just don't know how to differentiate between fact and something that was pulled from someone's ass (unfortunately, my dad is one of them).  So, even if this person is a lost cause, a well reasoned response, setting the record straight, could get across to someone reading it.

So, I'd respond calmly and then move on.  If they respond back in a less than respectful way, you can either leave that up to show just how out there the person is in contrast to your intelligent handling of the situation, or just delete them and ban them from there on out, leaving only the initial exchange.  It could be informative to someone else who reads your blog.

Here's what Wikipedia says about Obama's legal career:

"He graduated with a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard in 1991 and returned to Chicago where he had worked as a summer associate at the law firms of Sidley & Austin in 1989 and Hopkins & Sutter in 1990.

The publicity from his election as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review led to a contract and advance to write a book about race relations. In an effort to recruit him to their faculty, the University of Chicago Law School provided Obama with a fellowship and an office to work on his book.... The manuscript was finally published as Dreams from My Father in mid-1995.

Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years, as a Lecturer for four years (1992–1996), and as a Senior Lecturer for eight years (1996–2004).

In 1993 Obama joined Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a 12-attorney law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development, where he was an associate for three years from 1993 to 1996, then of counsel from 1996 to 2004, with his law license becoming inactive in 2002."

I also did a Google search for "Obama & state's attorney" and found nothing to indicate he was ever a prosecutor of any kind.

It may be presumptious to advise you on how to respond to your acquaintance, but you might suggest to him that if Obama's opponents will lie about things that are matters of public record and easily ascertainable, he should think about two things.  First, he should be very suspicious of anything negative he hears about Obama.  More important, he should ask himself what there is about Obama that makes people simply invent lies about him.  Why do they hate him so much?  Could it be because he's...wait for it...BLACK?

  •  The nurse's story (4+ / 0-)

As others have said, Senator Obama was never a state's attorney. His Wikipedia article is the most accessible biography I know to confirm that. So these stories are absurd.

I do know what got the nurse's story started, though. She wrote this article about it. It's important to realize that what she's talking about is a second-trimester abortion. There is no chance of this fetus surviving for long - it's lungs are too immature. No second-trimester abortion is pretty. Conservatives managed to get people outraged over "partial-birth abortions", but the alternatives to that are cutting up the fetus within the womb or performing a saline abortion which triggers delivery, usually of a stillborn, but sometimes it can take some hours for the fetus to die.

So what this nurse is so outraged about is how to treat this baby as it's dying. Such outrage did makes hospitals change so as not to have them just die in a closet, but it doesn't make them viable by being a little more respectful. It is still an abortion.

No one is more pro-choice than I am, but as a physician I know what abortion looks like. It takes some maturity to say that this is sometimes a good thing and the determination of when it's for the best is for the mother to decide, with professionals who are dedicated to help her, not the government or those who have their own agenda.
I'm not sure how far someone can get into that if that person was willing to swallow the ridiculous stories you relate. They are ridiculous. One can at least say that.
