Obama has been right on so many issues regarding foreign policy that this line of thinking is both shocking and disturbing:
"I have consistently called for deepening relations between Georgia and transatlantic institutions, including a Membership Action Plan for NATO, and we must continue to press for that deeper relationship. "
Obama perhaps could not politically do the correct thing and publicly chastise this apparently unstable Saakashvilli for invading and bombing S. Ossetia thus provoking Russia. But to ignore this and then continue the line that Georgia should become part of NATO is ridiculous.
Overlook for a moment that their democracy is no more fair than Russia's elections (what a joke--then again Gore-Bush 2000). Georgia obviously does not understand that in this nuclear age invading a territory on the border of Russia could lead to World War III.
All the more so of course if they are allowed entry into NATO. NATO is a military pact afterall and the West would be bound to help Georgia protect herself against a Russian invasion. Allowing Georgia into NATO, therefore, would put the fate of 7 billion human lives in the hands of Saakashvili and whether or not he wants to use his military to keep S. Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Has anyone listened to this clown the last few days? Makes me feel a bit better about the American people electing Bush.
This is a worrisome development that Obama seeks to continue Bush's failed policy regarding Georgia. Let's hope he thinks more about this before he is President (not that Georgia has a realistic shot of joining NATO but Obama could sell ketchup to an Eskimo wearing white gloves).
