I think these paragraphs from Bulgarian news agency FOCUS deserve some attention across the pond:
In an interview with the Russian Kommersant the President of Georgia Mikhail Saakasshvili stated that he is not afraid that a global conflict could start because of him, with the participation of Russia and the USA.
"I’ve seen so much cravenness over the last few days on behalf of the Russian militarism that I am not afraid of anything anymore," he stated.
Besides that, Saakashvili accused Russia of inflaming the conflict and said that he does not intend to make compromises with "Putin’s regime" and that he is ready on anything to give Geargia back its territories.
I don't care for nor know very much about the politics of the North Caucasus. But far as I gather, the ethnic strife between Ossetians and Georgians is old and immensily bitter.
The Georgian leader is not shy about his intentions: He wants to draw in the US on his side in a war with Russia. This is the same man McCain nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize (along with Hillary Clinton), evidently spurred on by nominally former lobbyist for Georgia, Randy Scheunemann, one of McCain's top foreign policy advisors.
It would be helpful if someone out there could get hold of and translate this interview. And, generally, keep translating what Saakashvili is saying to non-US media. He's been telling you what you want to hear for a long time. He could use a Macaca moment.
