This is not diary number 203995 on who will be the choice for VP, but a diary about how General Wesley Clark will be welcomed in Europe, if selected. This is my point of view as a Norwegian.
Clark is quite famous in Europe, form being in command when NATO for the first time in its history conducted military operations in 1999. He is also fairly popular, remembered as much as a diplomat as a military commander. He brought the alliance together and answered critical questions form press from all of Europe every day throughout the crisis in a balanced and reassuring way.
There is a reason why he was unpopular in the Pentagon. Many in the Pentagon brass wanted to go right ahead and bomb the place back to the Stone Age and leave the hole in the ground to Europe to figure out.
Since the General had studied in Europe, and have an above average IQ, he understood European sentiments and could level with European leaders he spoke to. He understood that Europe sill have a large population that still remember WW2 being fought on their soil, and are very much against any military action anywhere.
At great personal and career cost he convinced Clinton to choose a different line than the one being pushed from the Pentagon. As a consequence, the war in Kosovo was the first war in history where a part in the conflict (NATO) spent as much resources on not hurting civilians, as they did on hurting the enemy. This was essential for keeping the alliance together.
So Clark’s diplomatic capacities have already been tried out in Europe. And we still remember. This is why he has medals and titles from just about every nation in Europe (not Serbia for some reason...)
If picked by Obama, and elected in November, Clark would be quite an asset for the Obama administration when it comes to bringing in European allies to share the burden in Afghanistan, and help out in stabilizing Iraq while the US pulls out most troops. Make no mistake, Obama will be able to do this on his own, but Clark would be a huge asset on convincing nations to not just be friendly, but also commit troops and resources for the Taliban.
Even though the relationship across the Atlantic will be much better when Obama is elected President, he will need all the help he can get to restore the pre-Iraq relationship between USA and many European nations. Clark would be an excellent number 2 guy on that.
I have no idea who Obama will select. But I do hope its General Clark.
